Simply impressive.
The exterior of the BMW X6.
The BMW X6 is a sporty, agile addition to the BMW X family. The side
view shows the elegant proportions of a BMW Coupé. The roofline
flows down to the rear end cutoff in a gentle curve. The overhang
stretches the silhouette, while two “character lines” underscore the
dynamic wedge shape. When seen from the front and rear, all the
typical BMW X characteristics are in evidence: the horizontal lines
and prominent wheel arches emphasise the power, breadth and presence
of the BMW X6.
SUV seating comfort. Sports car
performance.
Driving dynamics of the BMW X6.
The driving dynamics of the BMW X6 are just as unique as the car
concept itself. Innovative steering and suspension control systems
like Dynamic Performance Control, combined with the most powerful
BMW engines available, mean drivers enjoy all the agility and
performance of a true sports car - in an intensity hitherto unknown
in vehicles with raised seating positions.
A coupé with lots of space for
comfort.
The spaciousness in the BMW X6.
Despite its elegant coupé character, the BMW X6 is uniquely,
surprisingly spacious. In the back, a central console separates the
two sporty seats, where passengers feel almost as pampered as the
driver. The unusually generous legroom and headroom and flat
floorspace (with no transmission tunnel) ensure high standards of
comfort on long journeys. The generosity of the BMW X6 continues in
the boot, where an impressive 570 l of space can be extended to
1,450 l by folding down the rear seat backs.
A new chapter in the history of
engines.
The BMW TwinPower Turbo
eight-cylinder petrol engine in the BMW X6 xDrive50i.
In the BMW X6 xDrive50i, TwinPower Turbo technologies join forces in
a V8 engine for the first time ever. High Precision Injection, two
turbochargers and double-Vanos all combine to deliver higher
performance and lower fuel consumption. The figures speak for
themselves: with 300 kW (407 hp), up to 600 Nm of torque between
1,750 and 4,500 rpm and an average fuel consumption of 12.5 l/100 km
(EU composite figures), the 4.4-litre V8 engine in the BMW X6
xDrive50i delivers best-in-class efficiency. Another world premiere
is the engine's exhaust superchargers, which are fitted centrally in
the V of the cylinder banks for the first time ever. By making the
block more compact, this not only saves weight, but also reduces the
pressure loss between intake and exhaust sides further still.
Elasticity meets torque.
The BMW TwinPower Turbo
straight six-cylinder petrol engine in the BMW X6 xDrive35i.
The 3-litre drive train with BMW TwinPower Turbo technology combines
a TwinScroll turbocharger with Valvetronic, double-Vanos and High
Precision Injection. The result is a high degree of revving power
complemented by high torque and low consumption. With 400 Nm
available from just 1,200 rpm upwards and a power output of 225 kW
(306 hp), this engine is one of the most powerful in its class. And
with a fuel consumption of just 10.1 l/100 km (EU composite figure),
it's also extremely efficient.
Higher torque, lower consumption.
The six-cylinder diesel engines in the BMW X6 xDrive 30d and xDrive
40d.
Both diesel engines in the BMW X6 xDrive30d and the xDrive40d use
state-of-the-art common rail diesel technology for higher
performance and singularly low consumption. The turbo diesel engine
in the BMW X6 xDrive30d delivers 180 kW (245 hp) and 540 Nm of
torque, yet consumes just 7.4 l/100 km (EU composite figure). Even
more efficient is the BMW X6 xDrive40d with its BMW TwinPower Turbo
technology: here, two turbochargers work in sequence to deliver
impressive power curves and high rpm. With 225 kW (306 hp) and 600
Nm of torque under the bonnet, the car sprints from 0 to 100 km/h in
just 6.5 seconds – yet consumes a mere 7.5 l/100 km (EU composite
figure).
To the power of eight.
The eight-speed automatic transmission Steptronic in the BMW X6.
The rev counter is the only place you'll notice: with the new
eight-speed automatic transmission the smaller increments from one
gear to the next don't just increase ride and shift comfort in the
BMW X6, they also enable faster gearshifts and more profitable use
of the optimum rev range. This reduces fuel consumption and lowers
CO2 emissions. The system is supported by the newly developed
converter clutch – even if you use the electronic gearshift lever to
shift manually.
The future of curves.
Dynamic Performance Control in the
BMW X6.
For the first time in a BMW, Dynamic Performance Control gives the
BMW X6 unique new cornering qualities. Seamless drive distribution
to the left- and right-hand rear wheels improves track stability,
regardless of whether the driver is accelerating or not. That means
you can enter bends more precisely and cross-accelerate faster with
optimised grip when you accelerate out. Together with the all-wheel
xDrive system, Dynamic Performance Control delivers enhanced agility
and dynamics on all surfaces.
Superior dynamics on every surface.
xDrive - the intelligent all-wheel
drive system on the BMW X6.
In the BMW X6, the all-wheel xDrive system provides better traction,
higher stability and more safety. If the sensors detect that the car
is about to drift off course - for example, in wintry conditions -
the system reacts in milliseconds. By adjusting the amount of power
that goes to the front and rear wheels, xDrive effectively nips
over- or understeering in the bud. And when xDrive and Dynamic
Performance Control join forces, the result is a whole new dimension
in driving dynamics and traction.
Precision at any speed.
Active Steering in the BMW X6.
Active Steering (optional) lets you steer the Sports Activity Coupé
even more dynamically and confidently in any situation. At low
speeds or when parking, the steering is light. At medium speed, it
becomes sporty and direct. At high speeds, it is pleasantly
indirect.
Assistance when it's needed.
Dynamic Stability Control (DSC) on
the BMW X6.
The BMW X6 features Dynamic Stability Control (DSC) for even safer
driving enjoyment. If there is a risk of the wheels skidding, for
instance, the brakes are applied selectively to each individual
wheel, whatever the surface or weather. This enables DSC to
stabilise the vehicle in milliseconds and to ensure optimum
tracking. The latest-generation DSC also contains extended functions
in addition to the integrated ABS and Dynamic Brake Control (DBC)
systems.
High in benefits.
The double-wishbone front axle on the BMW X6.
In conjunction with the wider track, the double-wishbone front axle
brings with it plenty of tangible benefits. In addition to
outstanding handling and improved stability, comfort is also
enhanced as less vibration is transmitted to the steering wheel.
This results in a smoother ride, reduced understeer and increased
driving comfort on longer journeys.
Eight-speed automatic transmission
Steptronic.
You don't have to fly business
class to be able to experience instant acceleration to top speeds
with negligible interruption. The eight-speed automatic transmission
Steptronic not only ensures incredibly soft gear changes across all
eight gears, it also significantly reduces fuel consumption.
The new eight-speed automatic transmission Steptronic shifts gears
so fast and seamlessly you can hardly spot it on the rev counter.
The additional gears reduce the engine's rev interval between
shifts, so the transmission process is barely noticeable. At the
same time, the engine is always held at the performance level at
which it can optimally utilise its strength and efficiency.
The eighth gear reduces the number of revolutions at high speeds,
tangibly increasing comfort while reducing fuel consumption and
emissions. The system is supported by the newly developed and more
efficient converter clutch – even if you use the electronic
gearshift lever to change gear manually.
Efficiency.
For driving pleasure in two worlds:
whichever engine you choose, efficiency and performance are the
hallmarks of all four diesel and petrol engines in the BMW X5.
Two BMW TwinPower Turbo engines are available for the petrol models
(xDrive50i and xDrive35i). The eight-cylinder in the xDrive50i
brings smoothness to the roads while the straight six-cylinder in
the xDrive35i impresses through efficiency. When it comes to the
diesel engines, the xDrive30d is the most efficient common rail
diesel engine in its class. Equally efficient, yet with increased
propulsion, is the final member of the engine quartet, the BMW
TwinPower Turbo xDrive40d.
All four engines feature the latest generation of BMW
EfficientDynamics – a range of efficiency-increasing technologies
that are implemented throughout the entire vehicle. The turbocharger
with adjustable turbine geometry, the engine electronics controlled
in parallel by several processors and the precise and fuel-saving
direct petrol injection are just a few of the sophisticated
technologies on offer.
BMW Efficient Dynamics.
Not just increasing driving
pleasure: BMW EfficientDynamics is a package of intelligent
technologies that significantly reduce fuel consumption and emission
levels while at the same time enhance performance in the BMW X5.
Innovations such as air vent control, Brake Energy Regeneration plus
a wide range of additional technologies notably reduce CO2 emissions
in the BMW X5 while, at the same time, the performance levels of the
engines are impressively improved. United with the standard
eight-speed automatic transmission Steptronic, the BMW X5 is the
most efficient vehicle in its class and the technological role model
of its vehicle segment.
BMW BluePerformance in the BMW
xDrive30d.
Ahead of its time: Add BMW
BluePerformance to your BMW xDrive30d and already fulfil the EU6
emission standards.
Thanks to their particle filter and exhaust-gas recirculation
system, the BMW X5 diesel engines have no problems complying with
EU5 requirements. In fact, with BMW BluePerformance, the BMW
xDrive30d already meets EU6 standards that aren't set to be
introduced until 2014. This is thanks to the use of an oxidising
converter, a diesel particulate filter and a catalytic converter to
reduce harmful emissions. In addition to filtering out microscopic
particulate matter from the exhaust stream, this combination ensures
effective control of nitrogen oxide emissions and a reduction in NOx
output.
Exterior design.
"My goal was to create for the all-new BMW X3 a 'dramatic vibrancy'
of light and shade emphasizing the form and definition on the
surface with new bold X-ness." Erik Goplen, BMW X3 exterior
designer.
Interior design.
"As a designer, I've always been
greatly inspired by natural occurrences, such as ice floes.
Translated to the interior design, a volume concealed beneath a
soft, almost organic skin erupts and thus demonstrates a living
modernity." Ulrich Ströhle, Interior Designer BMW X3.
Spaciousness: it's your immediate impression upon entering the BMW
X3. It's a result of your higher seating position and the remarkable
room to move that you enjoy in the BMW X3 – shoulder room, leg room,
head room. Parallel to the horizon, the lines of the instrument
panel draw your gaze to the distance. Vertical lines cross the
instrumental panel and direct your focus to the driver's carefully
designed workplace. Every detail is precisely crafted in materials
of outstanding quality and carefully selected colours. Together,
they make the clear statement: sitting here, you can go anywhere.
M Sport package.
Dynamic and compelling, the M Sport
package drives the sporty nature of the BMW X3 to even greater
heights. The rich Carbon Black metallic paint finish and powerful
19-inch M light-weight alloy wheel rims set the tone, while the
Sport suspension tuning delivers the experience.
Driving tools: the M multifunction leather steering wheel and
variable sport steering. The M gear selection lever boasts
particularly short throws. In the BMW xDrive35i with standard
eight-speed automatic transmission Steptronic, the M leather
steering wheel also features gearshift paddles. The sporty
suspension settings give you stiffer dampers and deliver precise
feedback.
Ergonomically shaped Sport seats provide side support against strong
lateral forces, such as when cornering at speed. The Pearlpoint
cloth-leather upholstery offers a beautifully tactile surface;
matching the BMW Individual roof liner, it comes in sleek
Anthracite.
With the M Sport package, the side skirts, wheel arches and front
and rear aprons are in body colour – for example, the Carbon Black
metallic paint finish that is exclusive to the M Sport package.
Window surrounds and roof rails are in the high-gloss BMW Individual
Shadow Line.
BMW EfficientDynamics.
Enhancing driving pleasure and so
much more besides: BMW EfficientDynamics represents a suite of
intelligent technologies that markedly reduce fuel consumption and
emissions while simultaneously boosting the performance of the BMW
X3.
The underlying principle is very straightforward: minimise waste,
maximise energy use. Brake Energy Regeneration, for example, charges
the battery with the power produced by the engine when the BMW X3 is
coasting or braking, freeing power output for acceleration. Other
innovative measures include electromechanical power steering, tyres
with reduced roll resistance and precise aerodynamic design. The
engines of the BMW X3 feature performance-boosting technology such
as the patented Twin Scroll turbocharger, petrol direction injection
or diesel common-rail injection, and extract even more power from
even less fuel.
Less CO2 emissions, more driving pleasure: this is BMW
EfficientDynamics.
Steptronic 8-speed automatic
transmission with Auto Start Stop function.
The BMW X3 makes efficiency
audible: at higher speeds, you can hear how the 8-speed automatic
transmission keeps engine speeds lower. And when you pull up, you'll
hear how Auto Start Stop turns off the engine to prevent waste. For
lovers of efficient and dynamic driving, it's music to your ears.
For the first time, BMW has combined the Auto Start Stop function
with an automatic transmission. Upon coming to a halt, the vehicle's
engine automatically turns off. Then, as you lift your foot from the
brake pedal, it comes to life again. Another first: this element of
BMW EfficientDynamics is available in the new four-cylinder model
xDrive20i and in the straight-six-cylinder models, the BMW
xDrive35i, xDribe35d and the xDrive30d.
The eight-speed automatic transmission Steptronic system shifts
gears so quickly and smoothly that the only indication is the
movement of the tachometer needle. The additional gears and closer
spacing in this transmission reduce the engine's rev interval
between shifts, so that changing from third to fourth, for example,
is practically undetectable. Driving becomes more dynamic, more
efficient – and more comfortable.
At higher speeds, the long eighth gear reduces the number of
revolutions per minute, resulting in quieter, more fuel-efficient
running. The newly developed, highly effective torque converter
clutch adds to this outstanding performance, even when you're
driving in manual transmission mode.
Brake Energy Regeneration.
Braking used to mean wasting
energy. Brake Energy Regeneration puts an end to that, by capturing
energy during braking and using it to charge the battery.
As soon as you brake or take your foot off the accelerator, the
alternator activates, capturing the vehicle's kinetic energy and
feeding it to the battery as electrical energy. When the battery is
adequately charged, the alternator disengages from the engine. This
reduces the demand on engine output and lowers emissions. At the
same time, the engine is free to deliver more of its power for
accelerating the BMW X3.
Electromechanical power steering.
The electromechanical power
steering system only activates when it's needed: when you're turning
the wheel. It draws electrical power from the battery, which Brake
Energy Regeneration has previously captured from the vehicle's
kinetic energy.
This element of BMW EfficientDynamics replaces the conventional
hydraulic power-steering system with an electric motor. While
hydraulic systems constantly draw power from the engine – thereby
consuming extra fuel – the innovative BMW system only springs into
action when it's actually needed. If you don't move the steering
wheel (on a straight, for example, or on a steady curve) the
electric motor remains inactive, reducing power consumption.
Gear shift indicator.
Timing is everything. That's why
the gear shift indicator is integrated into the BMW X3, showing the
most efficient gear for every driving situation.
Each BMW X3 with manual transmission communicates with its driver
via a display in the cockpit, with a digital indication of the
optimal gear for the driver to use. The driver can choose to shift
gears and save fuel – a particular benefit in city and cross-country
driving. The system also senses when the situation demands greater
acceleration: in this case, the gear shift recommendation is timed
to appear at a higher r.p.m. Perfectly individual, the gear shift
indicator reduces fuel consumption at every gear change.
Aerodynamics.
Painstaking research in wind
tunnels and with computer simulations has given the BMW X3 one of
the best drag coefficients in its class. Lower consumption, better
acoustics and greater safety are the results.
The optional roof rail, for example, has been sculpted to reduce air
resistance and therefore driving noise. The vehicle's underbody is
almost entirely smooth: air streams without turbulence from front to
rear. Shaped elements known as "ram air lips" channel air past the
wheels and directs it to cool the brakes. Simultaneously, the
underbody protects the vehicle from stone strike and dirt. The low
Cd value also ensures that the BMW X3 sticks firmly to the road at
high speeds. The optional Aero light-weight alloy 306 wheel rims
boost your vehicle's aerodynamics and efficiency even further.
These innovations are the result of the BMW Group's creation of a
dedicated aerodynamics testing centre. On a range of different
testing stands, vehicles are subjected to wind speeds up to 280
km/h; performance in rain, snow and ice is measured. Exposed to
temperatures from -30 to 55 C and altitudes up to 4200 metres
above sea level, the BMW X3 has proven its abilities in every
extreme.
Straight six-cylinder petrol engines
in the BMW xDrive28i and xDrive35i.
How do you improve a power unit
that's won the "Engine of the Year" six times? With a Twin Scroll
turbo charger, Valvetronic and petrol direct injection. And that's
just the beginning.
The improvements in each detail are evolutionary: each of the three
technologies has been enhanced in specific ways. What's
revolutionary is the way they all work together. In the BMW
TwinPower turbo in the BMW xDrive 35i, they have been completely
integrated with each other, creating a remarkable new unit. The
result: 225 kW (306 hp), 400 powerful Newtonmeter across a broad
range of engine speeds, and smooth power delivery. And all by
consuming just 8.8 litres petrol per 100 km.
Quiet, comfortable running and excellent performance are also
characteristics of the straight six-cylinder engine in the BMW
XDrive28i. With its cylinders lined in Alusil and crankcase
constructed from magnesium, it's one of the lightest six-cylinder
engines in its class, boasting 190 kW (258 hp) and 310 Nm torque.
Its advantages are not limited to its dynamic performance: it
consumes just 9.0 litres
Pure luxury, zero waste. Performance
economically measured.
The BMW straight six-cylinder
diesel engines in the BMW X3 pave the way for the new performance
culture: the BMW TwinPower Turbo xDrive35d with a powerful 230 kW
(313 hp) and thrifty average fuel consumption of 6.1 l/100 km.
The straight six-cylinder diesel engine with BMW TwinPower Turbo
combines common rail direct injection and two-stage turbocharging
with variable nozzle turbochargers. This intelligent technology
package dramatically reduces fuel consumption while enabling
impressive levels of performance. In the xDrive35d, this results in
powerful torque of up to 630 Nm from just 1,500 rpm and acceleration
from 0 to 100 km/h in 5.8 seconds – with average CO2 emissions of
only 162 g/kg.
The BMW xDrive30d reveals its strength in a harmonious and
commanding way: three litres of capacity and a turbocharging system
with variable inlet geometry deliver a dynamic 190 kW (258 hp) and
maximum torque of 560 Nm. The third-generation common-rail direct
injection system operates at pressures up to 1,800 bar, injecting
the diesel into the cylinders as a precise jet of ultra-fine
droplets for a clean, efficient combustion process. The results are
impressive: BMW xDrive30d accelerates from zero to 100 km/h in just
6.2 seconds. Equally impressive: the engine with its standard
particle filter produces just 159 g/km CO2.
Four-cylinder diesel in the BMW
xDrive20d.
380 Nm torque and 135 kW (184 hp)
are performance figures that few engines can boast. Achieving them
while consuming just 5.6 l/100 km and producing only 149 g/km CO2 is
something only the BMW xDrive20d can do.
To make this possible, the four-cylinder unit applies the same
technology as its six-cylinder stable-mate. Common-rail injection
that uses extremely high pressure to create greater efficiency and
smooth, quiet running. A turbocharger that boosts power and torque
at every speed. And additional honing of all contact surfaces that
reduces friction losses by 3.5 per cent compared to its predecessor.
Together, these result in a 16 per cent gain in efficiency.
Equipping the BMW xDrive20d with the eight-speed automatic
transmission Steptronic improves these results even further,
lowering CO2 emissions and enhancing driving comfort.
Head-Up Display.
One second and 28 metres: that's
far you travel when take your eyes off the road and read "100" on
your speedometer. Head-Up Display from BMW Connected Drive projects
the current speed or navigation instructions directly in the
driver's field of vision – so you always see what's important.
For example, important warnings are instantly visible on the Head-Up
Display, as is your Dynamic Cruise Control selected speed. The
navigation system's high-guiding function presents
easy-to-understand lane information during complicated manoeuvres.
The virtual image is projected onto the windscreen and is easy to
read even in poor light. By adjusting the height of the image, you
can position the Head-Up Display into your field of vision.
Information is instantly visible, without the need to take your
focus from the road ahead.
